The Science of Siddha

A System of Knowledge, Not Just a Tradition
HISTORY
Siddha medicine is one of the ancient traditional systems of medicine rooted in ancient Dravidian culture and originating in South India.
TAMIL
Siddha medicine is rooted in Tamil — one of the world’s oldest living languages, actively spoken and written in everyday life.
ORIGIN
According to Siddha tradition, this system of medicine originated thousands of years ago, dating back 5,000 to 10,000 years, and was developed by the Siddhars — the enlightened sages of ancient Tamil civilization. The word Siddha is derived from the Tamil word Siddhi, meaning the attainment of perfection or complete mastery over the body, mind, and soul.
The Siddhars
The Siddhars were revered sages, healers, and philosophers of ancient Tamil culture. They made significant contributions to Siddha medicine, emphasizing the use of herbs, minerals, balanced nutrition, and healthy living to promote wellness, longevity, and harmony between the body and nature.
Agastiyar
Considered the foremost of the 18 Siddhars — the enlightened Tamil sages who developed the Siddha system — Agastiyar is widely honored as the father of Siddha medicine. Renowned as a spiritual master, healer, and scholar, he is credited with preserving and expanding Siddha knowledge, laying the foundation for many traditional healing practices that continue to be respected today.
Siddhars and the Royal Dynasties
Historical Tamil literature and inscriptions suggest that Siddha physicians served the royal courts of the Chola, Pandya, Pallava, and Chera dynasties. Their expertise in herbal medicine and holistic healing played an important role in supporting the health and well-being of both the royal families and the wider community.
