History

Siddha medicine is one of the ancient  traditional system  of medicine rooted in ancient Dravidian culture and originated in South India.

Origin

It is believed to have developed around 5000 BC to 10,000 BC.The system is considered the “mother medicine”of the ancient  Dravidian people developed by Siddhars.The word Siddha is derived from the Tamil word Siddhi.Siddhi is the complete mastery over body,mind and soul.

Mythological & Spiritual Origins

Its origin is also traced to mythological sources belonging to the Shaivam tradition.According to this tradition, Lord Shiva(Adi Yogi)imparted the knowledge of medicine to his wife, Parvati. This knowledge was then passed on to Nandi and subsequently transmitted to the Siddhars.The term Siddhar refers to one who has attained extraordinary spiritual and physical powers (siddhis). Such attainment was believed to result from rigorous discipline of the mind and mastery over the body.

Siddhars

Siddhars are the mystical sages and spiritual masters of South India,rooted in ancient Tamil culture.Many Siddhars contributed to Siddha medicine,one of the world’s oldest holistic medical systems, emphasizing natural remedies, herbs, minerals, diet, and lifestyle for healing and longevity.

Agastiyar

Agastiyar  is a revered Siddhar and sage ,considered the father of Siddha medicine.A spiritual master, healer, and scholar, he attained Siddhi—perfection of body, mind, and soul. 

Siddhars and Royal Dynasties

Historically,Siddha physicians played an important role in the healthcare of ancient South India.Traditionally Tamil literatures and inscriptions indicate that Siddhars and Siddha practitioners were supported by royal dynasties such as the Cholas,Pandyas,Pallavas and Cheras.Their knowledge of herbs and holistic healing contributed to the wellbeing of society and the Royal kingdom’s.
